Rutland’s county town is a short drive from Empingham and is a traditional historic market town which still features stocks in its old market square complete with Butter Cross. One of the best examples of Norman architecture in the Country can be found at Oakham Castle set in grounds behind the market square. There is also a museum on the outskirts of town. Oakham School occupies a number of large areas around the town and its original school buildings in the centre of Oakham date back to 1584. Why not wander the streets and alleyways and explore some of the varied boutiques and specialist shops in the area? For a town of its size Oakham is fortunate to have a wide selection of cafes, pubs and restaurants to suit all pockets.
